Being aware of your surroundings and keeping a safe distance away from power lines saves lives. Here are some safety tips from Hydro One on how to be safe near power lines.
1. Keep at least three metres away from all power lines. If you see a downed line, stay back at least 10 metres and consider the wire to be live. Report any downed lines or electrical equipment to your hydro company. In an emergency, call 911.
2. Avoid storing material or equipment under power lines. If it must be stored underneath them, hang warning signs to prevent other workers from using hoisting equipment to move or lift it. Before moving ladders, rolling scaffolds or elevating work platforms, always check for overhead lines. Always make sure to carry ladders horizontally rather than vertically and to check for overhead power lines before you set them up for use.
3. Thinking of planting a tree or installing a fence? Power lines can also be located underground so make sure to contact Ontario One Call by phone or online before doing any type of digging.
